Sappi Fine Papers, a leading global provider of everyday materials from woodfibre based renewable resources, was faced with a significant challenge in the midst of the rapidly approaching Y2K phenomenon. With over $7B in sales and a vast presence across Europe, South Africa, and North America, the company produces an impressive 5.5 million tons of paper and 2.6 million tons of pulp annually. However, to continue thriving in a highly competitive market, Sappi Fine Papers had to overcome the daunting task of modernizing more than 1000 applications, spanning multiple departments and functionalities, in just two years.

These applications were critical to the company's everyday operations, ranging from ordering and finances to essential systems such as papermaking and weighbridges. Many of these systems communicated with low-level devices, such as inkjet printers, which further increased the complexity of the modernization process.
