The Challenge

Faced with the monumental task of modernizing over 1000 applications to ensure the company's continued growth and success.
Sappi Fine Papers, a leading global provider of everyday materials from woodfibre based renewable resources, was faced with a significant challenge in the midst of the rapidly approaching Y2K phenomenon. With over $7B in sales and a vast presence across Europe, South Africa, and North America, the company produces an impressive 5.5 million tons of paper and 2.6 million tons of pulp annually. However, to continue thriving in a highly competitive market, Sappi Fine Papers had to overcome the daunting task of modernizing more than 1000 applications, spanning multiple departments and functionalities, in just two years.

These applications were critical to the company's everyday operations, ranging from ordering and finances to essential systems such as papermaking and weighbridges. Many of these systems communicated with low-level devices, such as inkjet printers, which further increased the complexity of the modernization process. Complicating matters even more, the legacy applications were developed in a variety of technical environments, including Oracle Forms, Delphi, and C#.

Sappi Fine Papers needed a comprehensive solution that would not only address the immediate Y2K issue but also ensure that the modernized applications were both efficient and scalable, prepared to support the company's growth and adapt to the ever-evolving technological landscape. The task was undeniably colossal, but our team was ready to collaborate with Sappi Fine Papers and rise to the challenge of breathing new life into their legacy applications, setting them on the path to continued success.

The Solution

Successfully modernize over 1000 applications, consolidating them into a single development environment and reducing risk issues.

Sappi Fine Papers turned to SCAD Software, along with one other provider, to tackle the monumental task of modernizing their vast array of applications. SCAD Software was chosen for our proven experience and expertise in the field, and this project played a vital role in shaping the design of our unique SCAD Software Framework.

The Application Modernization Programme spanned two years, with the workload split evenly between the two suppliers. Throughout this process, our team focused on streamlining and consolidating the disparate applications into a single, unified development environment. This approach not only simplified the management and maintenance of Sappi's systems, but also ensured a more seamless integration between the various applications.

As a result of the successful modernization effort, the company saw a significant reduction in risk issues that had been previously identified as part of the programme. With all applications now operating within a single development environment, Sappi Fine Papers is better equipped to face the challenges of a rapidly evolving marketplace, while also enjoying the benefits of increased efficiency, scalability, and adaptability.
